The Battle Over The Soul

The story of 5 soldiers who remained wounded and alone in a little bunker that was bombed by an immense enemy forces that conquered the area and tried to destroy them. Some of them will scarify their own lives for the rest and become a lone POW, others will be ordered to strangulate their wounded friend so the enemy outside would not hear their moans. They didn’t know who will survive the next 48 hours till the rescue forces could arrive.

Holocaust: The Eastern Front

It was as if the Holocaust of Soviet Jews never existed, and disappeared from collective memory. And also to the Caucus region where the Jews of Nalchik amazingly survived.

Against all odds she is fighting an uphill battle – but she also knows that Ultra-Orthodox, Haredi women are the only segment of Israeli society that is not represented in the Parliament. When new elections are unexpectedly announced in she decides to take the chance of a lifetime, challenge the orthodox leaders and rabbis, and become the first orthodox woman to ever run for Knesset. She is an unexpected character, who is willing to fight for what she believes in even if the stakes are high.

Zaka: Living With Death

Two suicide bombers detonate their bombs in a busy shopping area in the center of Tel Aviv. The aftermath is horrific. Enter the ZAKA team. Black plastic bags in hand, they scour the area, intent on finding everything down to the last fingernail. Their mission: To collect every piece of flesh, every scrap of hair, left after a suicide bombing. Always on call, their beepers vibrate seconds after the disaster. They believe in providing the “Chessed Shel Emet” or “true act of kindness”-i.e. a burial for all human remains. They are the ZAKA volunteers. The film follows the ZAKA volunteers in more than two years of suicide bombings in Israel, in their training and when they get the call – to come and take care of the bodies. In February 2004 a group of Zaka volunteers traveled to The Hague with the bombed bus from one of the suicide bombings in Jerusalem.

The Stone Flower

This documentary follows two elderly Jewish women, who immigrated from Iran to Israel 50 years ago and currently live in a deprived area. Married in their teens, they moved from the domineering homes of their parents to those of their husbands. Now, aged 70, they reflect on the choices they have made, and those they were forced to make. Anxious to learn from their experiences, Sarit, the director, a 30 yr old unmarried Israeli-born Iranian, tries to map out a future for herself. The film raises questions about love, family, femininity and dreams.

The film is filled with interesting people who talk about their memories of Russia, the anti-Israel lessons, and the reasons that they left. They look back with humor on the difficulties of their aliyah and laugh at their mistakes in Hebrew. Their stories reflect the difficulties, the achievements, the failures of over a million people of that last great wave of immigration: what it means to them to be Israeli and what chances they have of receiving the stamp of “Israeliness.”
