The World is Funny

After eight years, a boy awakens a big secret from the past. Meanwhile, Jordana, a travel agent, discovers she is pregnant, though she has been celibate for years. At the same time, Golan, a radio host decides to revive Israeli comedy group, HaGashash HaHiver, in order to save his love. These characters and many other are part of a writers workshop in a public library in Tiberias, which weaves them into the story as one family, one city and one world.

The Secrets

In The Secrets, two brilliant young women discover their own voices in a repressive Orthodox culture where females are forbidden to sing, let alone speak out. Naomi, the studious, devoutly religious daughter of a prominent rabbi, convinces her father to postpone her marriage for a year so that she might study at a Jewish seminary for women in the ancient Kabbalistic seat of Safed. Naomi’s quest for individuality takes a defiant turn when she befriends Michelle, a free-spirited and equally headstrong fellow student. When the pair encounters a mysterious, ailing foreigner with a disturbing past named Anouk (the iconic French actress Fanny Ardant) they begin a risky journey into forbidden realms. In the hopes of easing her suffering, Naomi and Michelle secretly lead Anouk through a series of Kabbalistic cleansing rituals. The process opens up overwhelming new horizons for the girls who find themselves caught between the rigid male establishment they grew up in, and the desire to be true to themselves, no matter the cost.

The Policeman

Azulai is a policeman in Jaffa, whose incompetence is only matched by his soft-heartedness. His superiors want to send him to early retirement, but he would like to stay on the force, and the criminals of Jaffa don’t want to see him leave either.

Fig Tree

This coming-of-age story follows Mina, a 16-year old Jewish girl who has grown up during the Ethiopian Civil War. Her family plans on fleeing to Israel, where Mina’s mother awaits them. However, this plan excludes Eli, Mina’s Christian boyfriend, who lives in the woods to evade being drafted into the army. In order to remain together, Mina hatches a plan to save Eli, but in times of war, all plans tend to go wrong.

Crescendo

A famous conductor, Eduard Sporck, is approached to create an Israeli-Palestinian orchestra, but is quickly drawn into a sea of problems. Young musicians from both sides are unable to form a team, largely due to their personal experiences with war, oppression, or the risk of terrorist attacks. For the orchestra to be a success, Sporck must help his musicians overcome their own beliefs, fears, and bigotry in order to come together.

24 Days

After an ordinary family dinner, 23-year-old Ilan Halimi makes plans for coffee with a beautiful girl he met at work. The next time Ilan’s family hears from him is through a cryptic message from kidnappers, demanding ransom in exchange for their son’s life. This spurs a massive police manhunt over the next 24 days and triggers political outcry against anti-semitism in France.
