Crossing the desert on foot, desperate African refugees attempt to reach safety in Israel. But Israel is not just any country – and its own past as a haven for refugees from war torn Europe is no simple matter. The film follows various refugees as they struggle to find a place in a country that accepts them, but takes no responsibility for their acclimatization.

The journey of young Estonian girls that are smuggled through Egypt to be auctioned off as prostitutes in Israel. We then see a border of barbed wire and a group of young women being led to the other side. This marks both the end and the beginning of their voyage, for all are Eastern Europeans destined to become part of the flesh trade, which clearly has a place in modern Israel. Their promised land is not a place of milk and honey, but instead quite the opposite: a sordid, anonymous, surreal non-place, where they are hustled and moved around like cattle, afforded little dignity, stripped of their individuality and sent out to pay their way.

In the imaginary village of Entshongweni, very far from western civilization, the young James is chosen to undertake a mission – a pilgrimage to Holy Jerusalem. But Israel is no longer the Holy Land that James and his people imagined. At the airport, James is suspected of trying to infiltrate the country in order to work illegally. He is jailed and destined for deportation. Inside the dark cell, as James prays to God to allow him to complete his mission, a miracle occurs. A mysterious stranger posts bail for him. But it soon becomes clear that James’ freedom has come at a price – his savior is a manpower agent, who rescues illegal migrant workers in exchange for employing them in hard labor jobs. From then on, James’ journey to Jerusalem turns into an unpredictable journey through the cruel heart of our economic system. With good teachers, a bit of luck, and some lateral thinking, James learns the tricks of the game and plays it towards an inevitable end.

A Hebrew Lesson is a humorous, smart and exciting mosaic of a mixture of immigrants of various nationalities and their teacher. It is a film that gets under the skin of its participants as well as that of the audience. One of those whose characters won’t let you go even days after having seen it – and actually you don’t want them to leave. Chin left her daughter in China and came to Israel to make a living there. She cleaned Ehud’s house, and they fell in love. Sasha never considered immigrating to Israel. But four years after his wife left Russia with their daughter, he understood that life without his child would be worthless. He abandoned a thriving business, only to find himself in Tel Aviv’s worst neighborhood. Marisol grew up as a Jewish princess in Lima, Peru and came to Israel to learn something about life. An unplanned pregnancy alters her plans. These and other characters meet in a Hebrew language Ulpan, where their personal stories melt with the complexities of Israeli reality. The immense effort of learning a new language is revealed through their encounter with a strange culture and an unfamiliar environment. Israeli society is revealed through the foreigner’s eyes. This gaze – at times funny, at times sad – paints daily reality with irony. But beyond the obvious differences, the human common denominator of longing and love triumphs time and again.

In her painful blog, Vaan Nguyen unfolds the absurdities of her life as an Israeli-born Vietnamese. Her father was one of the many “boat-people” who fled Vietnam after the fall of Saigon in 1975 and one of the few who found asylum in the “Land of the Jews.” Now, when the time has come to go back home, they return to Vietnam, hoping they can reclaim their confiscated lands. Their journey becomes a parable on loss of identity and the fate of refugees.
